SXSW 2010 roundup

just got back from SXSW in Austin where the film I produced, EARTHLING, premiered. Read a good write up on IO9!

SXSW
is a combination film festival, music conference, web 2.0 tech summit, video game demo floor and all around media production hub. Its a place where you can see a concert by Motorhead, watch an Ivan Reitman B-movie classic called "Cannibal Girls", check out a panel on DIY 3D Stereoscopic production, participate in a Kodak Super 16mm workshop and go to a FCPUG Supermeet featuring DSLR guru Phillip Bloom. All-in-all-the-place-to-be.

You couldnt walk three feet down the hall w/o seeing a suped up 5D or 7D shoulder rig. Canon was also a sponsor of the Supermeet, with the hype of the 24P/5D update permeating the room. Even the movie that won the Narrative Competition was shot on the 7D. ( a feature called Tiny Furniture).

Other cool films screened included the Brian Poyser film "Lovers of Hate", and the Frank Ross movie "Audrey The Trainwreck"; both of which were HVX'ed by David Lowery.

Special mention goes to the no-budget "found footage" parody feature "Jimmy Tupper vs The Goatman of Bowie". The movie starts off with less than zero web-cam style production which changes to full score and HVX cam in a pretty cool Blair Witch-meets-Wendigo-meets-Evil Dead kinda way. Also be on the look-out for "Annie Goes Boating" a short shot in stereo 3D with two RED cams. The filmmaker lugged around a large Christie HD5K Projector and a custom stereo server to all his screenings. Check out some behind the scenes photos and workflow info here
