Panasonic just put this out this excellent white paper on how Proxy recording works using the HPX2000: (it will also work with the HPX3000 and the P2 Varicams)
ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/Drivers/PBTS/papers/Proxy_Video_Final.pdf
if you add the proxy encoder, you can shoot email-able footage direct to off-the-shelf SD cards at the same time you're shooting to P2. This creates simultaneous dailies for field producers or clients. The Proxy files can also be played from QT and easily loaded up into a Itunes folder for syncing with Ipods/Iphones (!)
Here's one workflow idea: at the end of the day's shoot (or during the day) the On-set P2 Media Manager would pull out the SD card from the cam and quickly load it up onto his laptop and create a Itunes playlist. He can then sync this up to the Producer's Ipod (preferably Ipod Touch or Iphone for the 3.5' screen). He just repeats the drag and drop per department head that would need to review dailies. At the highest bit rate (1500kbps), you should be able to fit 5 hours of footage onto 4GB.
The Proxy's can also be emailed out by Smart Phones with SD card compatibility.
You can also do insta-TC Window burns in the proxies if you want to use them for off-line editorial!
